R-22 FAQs

1. Why is R-22 being banned the EU?

Studies have shown that the refrigerant R-22 damages the O-Zone layer and legislation (EC Reg. 2037/2000) has been enacted that restricts the use of R-22 in the future. From January 2010 the use of virgin R-22 will be prohibited.

2. How can I identify if my air-conditioning system uses R-22?

The refrigerant used by the air-conditioning system will be stated on a nameplate on the unit, however, it is likely that any air-conditioning equipment more than 6 years old uses R-22.

3. What solutions exist for dealing with R-22 air-conditioning units in the my building?

If the air-conditioning units in your building use R-22 there are four possible courses if action:

  • Use a ‘drop in’ refrigerant as a direct replacement for R-22 in existing equipment. These have been specifically developed to replace R-22 as a short term solution. However, each air-conditioning unit is different and it is difficult to tell how this will work in your system until you actually use it. System performance may also be affected in some instances;
  • Use a ‘replacement technology’. This means you can keep the existing refrigerant pipe-work and wiring and just replace the air-conditioning units to avoid disruption (e.g. removing ceilings, core-drilling etc) and excessive downtime. Pipe-work has to be cleaned and prepared to remove R-22 oil residues which are incompatible with R-410A systems. Pipe-work should also be pressure tested to see if it can cope with higher operating pressures of R-410A;
  • Complete replacement of the air-conditioning system is the best solution especially in critical applications, for example, server room close control units;
  • Do nothing and hope that your maintenance provider has sufficient quantities of cheap R-22 available to deal with emergencies!!

4. Can DAL so a site evaluation for me specifically and is this free of charge?

Yes. DAL engineers can visit your site and discuss the best solutions with you. Call sales on 01-4605555 to arrange a site visit.

5. If I do decide to replace my old air-conditioning system what system should I choose?

Within the industry a refrigerant called R-410A has been selected as a replacement for R-22. R-410 has an O-Zone depletion potential = 0 and is also non toxic and inflammable. R-410A systems are generally more energy efficient than R-22 systems especially when used with modern inverter technology. DAL engineers will be able to recommend the most cost effective solution for you.

6. Does the replacement system require any additional service or maintenance?

No.

7. Can the new replacement system provide heating and cooling?

Yes. Ask your supplier for a heat pump system that can provide heating in Winter and cooling in Summer.

8. What experience does DAL in replacing R-22 systems?

DAL operates a nationwide air-conditioning installation and service business from two locations in Dublin and Limerick. DAL completes over fifty R-22 replacement projects in Ireland every year for many semi-state & private companies. DAL can also provide a 24/7 call-out service if required.
